About Betty Krawczyk
If
you are among the fortunate who have heard Betty speak in the past, you
do not need to be convinced to attend. If you have not, don't miss this
rare opportunity to meet her.
Under
her 85 year old "sweet grandmother" exterior, lies a wise, hilarious,
radical woman who has taken on every major logging company in British
Columbia, the West Vancouver Police, and the Government of BC itself.
She has fought her battles in the Supreme court of Canada where she
represented herself, and has "done her time", with over 3 full years
spent in British Columbia prisons.
At
the same time, the Royal BC Museum recognized Betty Krawczyk as "one of
the 150 people who have shaped BC's story" along with David Suzuki,
Emily Carr and Kim Campbell. She has received a number of awards for her
writing, and is a sought after speaker at conferences, universities and
demonstrations across the country.
Betty
is a mother of 8, grandmother of 8, and great grandmother of 3. She
attributes her seemingly boundless energy, excellent health and sharp
mind to her passion about what she does, her love of tap dancing,
jumping on her trampoline, and eating lots of jalapeƱo peppers.
Betty may make you laugh hysterically, she may scare the daylights out of you, but she will definitely make you think.

Raised
in Louisiana, Betty Krawczyk immigrated to Canada from the US in 1966
with her physicist husband and six children. During the US Civil Rights
movement, Krawczyk became sensitized to racism and developed a lifelong
urge to oppose injustice. She continued her struggle in the anti-war
movement and later, in Canada, in the early Women’s Liberation movement.
Divorced,
her children grown, Krawczyk moved to the wilderness of Clayoquot Sound
in British Columbia in 1989 and immediately became involved in the
environmental conflict there. Arrested for practicing peaceful civil
disobedience in an effort to help prevent the destruction of B.C.’s
remaining old growth forests, Krawczyk served over three years in
prison.
She
is currently exploring the issue of women and the environment with a
deeper understanding. A prolific writer, Krawczyk has just published her
fifth book, Betty, Blue Belle and Bitch.
